It was celebration galore in Abonnema, Rivers State on the 21st of June 2017. The town was set agog as residents remembered the sacrifices of their fallen heroes during the Nigerian civil war. This day is popularly referred to as GO TO NIGER. The day reminds Abonnema people of the liberation of their town by Federal forces on the 21st of June 1968 from the Biafran army that held their community under siege.
Many people from this part of Rivers State still find it difficult to reconcile with the Biafran self determination struggle having been victims of brutalization in the hands of the Biafran forces. According to some of the elders, many of their kinsmen were rounded up and executed in the market square for failing to support the Biafran struggle. Even their children were conscripted and used as spies against their own kith and kin.
