STATE OF THE IJAW YOUTH COUNCIL (IYC): BEFORE THEY DESTROY THE FABRICS OF COUNCIL
The National leadership of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide has watched with bewilderment the controversies surrounding the activities of some characters purporting to act on behalf of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) worldwide. Their activities have brought disgrace and public opprobrium to the umbrella body of Ijaw youths, the IYC touted to be the most revolutionary organization in sub-sahara Africa.
These characters have within a short period of time engaged in despicable activities ranging from outright fraudulent claim to have attended and presented a lecture in a non-existent seminar in faraway United States of America to becoming members of a Presidential Aspirant campaign team in the name of the IYC to outright endorsement of the sitting President as their preferred candidate in the 2019 Presidential election.
We are not surprised by the activities of these persons. We knew all these while that the desperation to seize the IYC was to use the platform to become overnight billionaires.
These characters thought that once they call themselves leaders of IYC, manna will fall from heaven and make them rich overnight. They fail to realize that IYC is not a business name and that if you must lead IYC and lead well, you must have a source of living. This was the reason why some of their associates in the past had consistent running battles with the IYC led by Kuromiema Abiye and Udengs Eradiri as Presidents.
However, the President of the IYC, Eric Omare has vowed to restore sanity to the IYC while stating clearly that the IYC is neither a political organization nor a business name for people to beg money from one office to the other.
The IYC is a revolutionary grassroots movement with a mandate to achieve resource control and self-determination for the Ijaw people in solidarity with other ethnic nationalities of Nigeria in line with the historic Kaiama Declaration.
Therefore, we would not allow strange elements who know nothing about the founding philosophy of the organization to destroy the fabrics of the IYC.
The IYC has not endorsed any Presidential Candidate and would not be part of the campaign team of any of the Presidential candidates in the 2019 elections, except an Ijaw man or woman is the Candidate of any of the leading parties or a candidate that has done something extra ordinary for the Ijaw people.
Of course the IYC cannot endorsed a candidate leading a government that is after the lives of key Ijaw leaders, frustrating the take-off of the only university sited in the riverine areas of the Ijaw nation and has not done anything significant in terms of infrastructure for our people.
This brings to the fore why we refused to accept the strange and absurd decision of the Ijaw Elders Committee that was set up by Governor Dickson of Bayelsa State. Though the members of the committee have been very apologetic since their mistakes became glaring but have been appealing ‘’in the interest of the Ijaw Nation’’. And if we may ask: what is the interest of the Ijaw nation in turning the IYC to beggars associations?
What is the Ijaw interest in turning the IYC to political endorsement platform? What is the Ijaw interest in using the IYC platform to become members of campaign team of a Presidential Aspirant who is not even an Ijaw?
The point must be made that the IYC support for the election of former President Jonathan both in 2011 and 2015 elections is distinguishable from the present situation? The Jonathan presidency was an Ijaw project and it was the general consensus of the Ijaw people to support his election bid and the INC and IYC as the umbrella bodies had the duty in the Ijaw national interest to lead the campaign in reaching out to other ethnic nationalities.
This was what the Abieye Kuromiema and Udengs Eradiri leadership of the IYC did. The present situation where some characters are using the IYC platform to endorse candidates left, right and centre is totally unacceptable and has brought the IYC into serious disrepute. The half-hearted denial by the leader of this dishnourable hustlers’ team is just an afterthought.
Consequently, we call on all Ijaw patriots to join hands with the President of IYC, Eric Omare and his executive council to restore sanity to the IYC. This is the time the IYC is most needed to lead the clamour for the restructuring of Nigeria towards achieving resources control.
It is now crystal clear that the transferred aggression by some stakeholders of the IYC and Ijaw nation against the Eric Omare leadership would not do the Ijaw nation any good. We cannot allow the fabrics of our dear IYC that our founding fathers and successive leaders have labored hard to build to become the envy of others to be destroyed by hustlers who are ready to do anything to make money.
The IYC is not a business name
