Eboue’s ordeal is a reminder to footballers of the need for education

Published by:

Eboue

Arsenal’s former star Emmanuel Eboue has been in the news recently and the story has quickly moved from one of sadness to a happier turn. Eboue, who once slept in a palatial home and drove expensive cars, recently disclosed he is bankrupt.

Many were stunned to read of the Ivorian International ‘s plight of going from a multimillionaire footballer not so long ago to a broke dude who couldn’t afford a washing machine.

Then quite quickly, his former club, Gal at a Sarah of Turkey moved to his rescue by offering a job as coach of their under 14 side and a chance to rebuild his life.

The tale of Eboue going broke filled me with pity as I read that he contemplated suicide after he was suspended from football for a year for failing to fulfill his contractual agreement with a former agent of his, taking away his number one source of making money.

Then more heartbreakingly, the woman who was supposed to be the person of his life, the one he had sworn to live forever with till death comes calling, the woman he called wife left him in financial tatters as she left him in a divorce that meant he lost most of his property to her, and also, the custodianship of his children. HYPREP medical outreach in Ogoniland

As part of the campaign promises of the Ogoni land clean up in Rivers State by the President Muhammad Buhari led Administration, as being handled by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation project(HYPREP) has continued it’s medical outreach for the people of Ogoni.

Speaking to newsmen yesterday at Terabor in Gokana Local Government Area, the Coordinator of the HYPREP, MARVIN DEKIL expressed his gratitude towards the massive turn out for the health outreach adding that the essence of the Medical outreach was to capture the health history of the Ogonis’ just as he called the Rivers State Government to join hands and support the Ogoni land clean up.

“I am overwhelmed with the number of people I saw receiving treatment from the experts. It is something that is quite pleasing to me. I believe that the mandate of HYPREP is being realised and the commitment of Federal Government to this project is also something that we will continue to appreciate. And you will recall that this program started on 26 December in Khana Local Government Area where the team of doctors also attended to a huge crowd. We proceeded to Tai on the 28 December, we experience even more turnout.

Today, we experienced more than the number we expected, telling us that the people need help and the government is here to provide that help. Implementation of the UNEP report is providing the help. Apart from providing medical services, one of the essence of this exercise is to capture the health history of all the patience that we interact with, that health history is one of the things that will build the foundation, the database for the health impact study, a larger scale impact study which we will be starting soon. The Rivers State government which we are calling on at this point to also support the program because it’s a collective process. We are here in Gokana, which means we need the support of Gokana Local Government, we are here in Rivers State, the project is in Rivers State, so we need the support of Rivers State Government. The Federal Government has started it, so it’s a collective project for all of us and there’s something for us to win. There’s a win for the Federal Government which they have started, there’s a win for Rivers State Government when they participate, and there’s a win for Gokana Local Government when they participate. I also want to use this opportunity to state clearly that those who wants to cause trouble, the project will not tolerate detractors.

We are appealing to Ogoni people to continue to support us. We have over 30 doctors here. I’m seeing thousands of people being attended to.” Continue reading

Chelsea goes second on the table with a 5-0 win over Stoke

Published by:

Chelsea wins

Chelsea temporarily climbed into second place above Manchester United, in the English Premier League on Saturday after spanking Stoke City 5-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Antonio Conte’s side made the perfect start when German defender Antonio Rudiger rose above three Stoke defenders to head home from Willian’s free-kick in the third minute.

Eden Hazard was rested on the Chelsea bench, but his replacement Drinkwater did a passable impression of the brilliant Belgian, the midfielder bagging his first goal for the Blues with a blistering strike from the edge of the area in the ninth minute.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes’s decision to field a severely weakened team in the midst of the hectic festive fixture list was backfiring badly.

The visitors were three down by the 23rd minute when Pedro finished off Willian’s pass to put Chelsea on course for a fourth win in their last five league games.

Willian got on the scoresheet himself in the 73rd minute, striking home a penalty awarded for a foul on the Brazilian, before wing-back Davide Zappacosta grabbed his first Premier League goal with two minutes remaining. Continue reading
