HYPREP medical outreach in Ogoniland
As part of the campaign promises of the Ogoni land clean up in Rivers State by the President Muhammad Buhari led Administration, as being handled by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation project(HYPREP) has continued it’s medical outreach for the people of Ogoni.
Speaking to newsmen yesterday at Terabor in Gokana Local Government Area, the Coordinator of the HYPREP, MARVIN DEKIL expressed his gratitude towards the massive turn out for the health outreach adding that the essence of the Medical outreach was to capture the health history of the Ogonis’ just as he called the Rivers State Government to join hands and support the Ogoni land clean up.
“I am overwhelmed with the number of people I saw receiving treatment from the experts. It is something that is quite pleasing to me. I believe that the mandate of HYPREP is being realised and the commitment of Federal Government to this project is also something that we will continue to appreciate. And you will recall that this program started on 26 December in Khana Local Government Area where the team of doctors also attended to a huge crowd. We proceeded to Tai on the 28 December, we experience even more turnout.
Today, we experienced more than the number we expected, telling us that the people need help and the government is here to provide that help. Implementation of the UNEP report is providing the help. Apart from providing medical services, one of the essence of this exercise is to capture the health history of all the patience that we interact with, that health history is one of the things that will build the foundation, the database for the health impact study, a larger scale impact study which we will be starting soon. The Rivers State government which we are calling on at this point to also support the program because it’s a collective process. We are here in Gokana, which means we need the support of Gokana Local Government, we are here in Rivers State, the project is in Rivers State, so we need the support of Rivers State Government. The Federal Government has started it, so it’s a collective project for all of us and there’s something for us to win. There’s a win for the Federal Government which they have started, there’s a win for Rivers State Government when they participate, and there’s a win for Gokana Local Government when they participate. I also want to use this opportunity to state clearly that those who wants to cause trouble, the project will not tolerate detractors.
