THE CITY UNDER SEIGE: CASES OF KIDNAPPING IN BENIN CITY AND ITS ENVIRONS ON THE RISE

Published by:

Ambassador Osayomore Joseph

Benin City is synonymous with an enviable culture and history, but the recent tales of kidnapping cast a shadow over its rich past.

The era of the Anini’s and Monday Osunbor’s could not be compared to the dastard acts of present day kidnappers who have robbed many families of their loved ones and bread winners. Several children have been orphaned and women widowed because of their heinous activities.

The city of Benin today accounts for one of the highest cases of high profile kidnappings in the country. Only recently, the Billionaire kidnapper, Evans confessed to kidnapping in Benin and its environs. A popular business tycoon, Uyi Electrical was one of his victims.

Despite the arrest of the kidnap kingpin, the crime has continued to hold sway in the City. Prominent individuals have been kidnapped, including the Manager of Ogba Zoo, Mr Ehanire and the iconic musician, Ambassador Osayomore Joseph. The situation does give one reason for deep reflection.

Public appeals have been made for the release of these individuals, but to no avail. Recently, the family of the legendary musician was able to establish contact with his abductors who are asking for hefty sums of money for a man who has all the years campaigned for justice for his people.  Osayomore’s family told newsmen that their patriarch is not feeling too fine, and moreover is without his medication. They appealed to his captors to release their sick father, so he could attend to his health. Continue reading

EMPOWER THE YOUTHS – JUSTICE EBERECHI NYESOM-WIKE

Published by:

Wife of Rivers Governor, Justice Eberechi Nyesom-Wike

The wife of the Rivers State Governor, Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike has called for the regular engagement of youths as a means of making them more productive citizens.

Speaking during a workshop organised by Chevening Scholarship and British Council in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Justice Nyesom-Wike said that investment in the education of youths will empower them to contribute to societal development.

She said: “I have a lot of faith in the youth. We are talking of transforming Nigeria, that is the way we should go. My hope is that we should reach out to younger people, especially those who are in school”.

“An idle mind is the devil’s workshop. We have a non governmental organisation, RivEthics , which moulds the behaviour of our youths to make them better citizens.

She regretted that most adults are not leading lives that will serve as good examples to youths. Continue reading

UNCOMPLIMENTARY REMARKS ABOUT GOV. WIKE OVER BONNY-BODO ROAD: RIVERS PDP DARES DAKUKU

Published by:

The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has described as mere infantile indulgence in a ludicrous declamation to reclaim a part of his bartered and worthless image, the statement by the All Progressives Congress, APC, 2015 Governorship failure in the State, Dakuku Peterside that he will personally lead a public protest to Government House, Port Harcourt against any move by the State government to frustrate the flagging-off of Bonny-Bodo Road project by the federal government as he alleged.

Without mincing words, we dare challenge Mr. Dakuku Peterside and those pushing him to be bold enough to call for public protest even in his Opobo town as boasted to press home his claims and see if he will not fail again even more woefully than his first crash and besides, will learn a bitter lesson.

Dakuku Peterside, the PDP believes is only trying to dust his rickety and outdated political profile by making bogus statements and insulting his naturally superior Executive Governor of the State, Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike, thinking that will impress his political benefactors to reconsider him for another shot at the Office of the Governor of Rivers State.

It’s laughable that Mr. Dakuku Peterside who has not attracted any developmental project to the State since he was appointed Director-General (DG) of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) over two years ago would shamelessly wish to measure heights with His Excellency, who, by all assessments has been nationally acclaimed as exemplary in good governance and crave for rapid development of his State, human and material.

If Dakuku Peterside is so blind that he cannot see and appreciate the new face of Port Harcourt courtesy of Gov. Nyesom Wike, the turn-around of the parlous state of the roads and every other area of the State economy that was in comatose while his political ally, and mentor, Rotimi Amaechi was in office for eight years, can he not also hear of the accolades, applauses of more reasonable and right thinking members of our society or smell the sweet aroma of happy and lively Rivers people and residents alike across the length and breadth of the State. PEER REVIEW TO FASTER REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT – GOVERNOR WIKE

Published by:

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that the peer review of projects and programmes between South-South and South-East States will lead to the faster development of the two regions.

Speaking in Calabar on Wednesday after his state visit to Cross River State, Governor Wike said that peer review exposes governors to different techniques of achieving development for the good of their people.

He said: “We are all from one zone and from the PDP. From time to time, we encourage ourselves by visits to exchange ideas and to see how we can move the region forward.

“We also belong to the South-South and South-East Governors Forum where we agreed to work together economically and politically in order to enhance inter-regional development.” Continue reading
