According to our correspondent, a 29 year old welder, Ugochukwu Arugo has been caught for allegedly murdering his landlady lover with a pestle.
The accused said he hacked his lover, who is also his landlady, Mrs. Ngozi Igwe, to death with a mortar pestle in Aluu community, Ikwerre Local Government area of Rivers State because she was jealous of his wife.
He made this confession on Thursday in Port Harcourt as the Rivers State Police Command paraded over 89 suspects who were arrested within May and June 2017 from different parts of the state in connection with armed robbery, cultism, kidnapping, murder and child trafficking.
Arugo is a native of Isi-Ala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State . He said that his victim (Ngozi) was her widowed landlady and that they have been in a deep relationship since the demise of Ngozi’s husband.
However, the suspect told the Police Commissioner, Ahmed Zaki and journalists at the Officers Mess on William Jumbo, Old Government Reserved Area that trouble started between him and his lover when he (Arugo) went to his village married a wife and brought her to live with him.
Arugo stated that “I am here because I committed a crime because I did it unknowingly and I never knew it will be like this. She is my landlady and we have been dating”. He said that things got bad when he went to the village and got married. That after bringing the wife to the yard where the landlady lives, she started quarreling with him, that why did he go and get married without informing her. Arugo said that that was where his problem started, moreover because he tried to hide the amorous relationship from his wife. He said that unfortunately, last night quarrel with the landlady took a different turn. “As we were quarreling last night I used mortar pestle and hit her head, she fell down and died”.
However, the Rivers State Police Command stated that the incidence of crime has reduced in the state, even as they reinstated their commitment in ensuring that crime is brought to the bearest minimum in the state. Rivers State Police Commissioner , Ahmed Zaki, while parading over 80 arrested suspects noted that the state command had launched a proactive approach to tackle the menace of crime in the state, disclosing that the state was divided into seven sectors for easy patrol and effective onslaught against criminals in the state.
The police boss also disclosed that his men has arrested a gang of robbers who attacked a trailer belonging to Dangote group of companies around Choba community in Port Harcourt and robbed and killed two of their victims.
While addressing newsmen, Zaki said 6 vehicles, 386 life ammunition, 1275 cartridges, 20 pistol guns were among the items recovered from criminals during the 38 days period.
Zaki has called for more cooperation from residents of the state in fighting crime, and advised that people do well to report crime related issues to the police for immediate action.
