Tonye Princewill

The Journey so far of a business man cum politician. Tonye Princewill, a prince from the Amachree dynasty, whose father is a monarch, The Amayanabo of Kalabari Kingdom. He is a successful business man, who has ventured into various political parties in an attempt to govern Rivers State. As a business man, he is always striving to make profit or make known his product to the public. Many see him as a “serial decampee”whose persistent hope to govern Rivers State has been eluded by the politics of the majority in the state.

He is a very good orator but his kind of politics has been mostly described as politics without principle because of the way he jumps ship. People believe that his political ideology is influenced by expediency. Political commentators have described him has a  “Must Win” politician. This has led to the movement of his supporters from one political party to the other. He once accused the past Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi as one who sold Rivers asset to fund his political party All Progressive  Congress (APC) party. Although on the 2nd of June, 2017,  he decided to join a political party he once accused of embezzling the state funds. Many have said that he opted for the APC in other to context for 2019, not minding what he has said concerning the party.
He started his political journey with Action Congress of Nigeria, 2007, when he contested for the governorship position against Celestine Omehia of PDP. After Celestine Omehia lost the Supreme Court battle to Rt. Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, Tonye Princewill decided to form a political movement called Forum of Organized Opposition Political Parties in other to support Gov. Amaechi.
In the year 2014, he was an aspirant under the platform of PDP, but when he realized he couldn’t win the party primaries, as most people were in support of Nyesom Wike, he left PDP and moved to Labor Party where he successfully became the gubernatorial aspirant of the party  in 2015. Tonye Princewill is yet to serve the state in any official capacity, though he has worked in various organizations such has Royal Dutch Shell, Citi Bank, and Panasonic. Currently, he is the chairman of Riverdrill group of companies. He remains a friend to all and sundry despite his political affiliations. He is loved by the youth, both at home and abroad. His company RiversDrill has absorbed a huge chunk of unemployed youths in the state, both skilled and unskilled labour. His philanthropic lifestyle had lots of youths on his scholarship and empowerment scheme both for the youths, widowed, physically challenged amongst others. He is also a movie producer and was involved in the movie called 76. The movie centres on the intrigues and events surrounding the Nigerian civil war and it won several awards in the just concluded AMCVA awards 2017.
Mr Tonye Princewill in his favourite clichés had repeatedly said”politics and good governance is too serious a business to be left for politicians”. Upon his recent defection and the huge controversy surrounding it when asked about his political integrity and his reasons for defecting to a party he once castigated; he replied thus;” “My recent tour of the state has revealed that many of those who were angry with Ameachi in 2015, have cut their noses to spite their faces. There is nothing New about Governor Nyesom E. Wike. It’s old wine in an old bottle forced on you to drink because of your anger for Ameachi. If I can reconcile with Ameachi, so you can.. Come and help us. We need you. Wike is doing the best he can.. He and his team are simply not built for governance, they lack the capacity. My aspiration is for the state to be productive with jobs for youths built on the foundation of peace, security and development built for the many and not the few without being on the hot seat. I am not in the APC to contest but I will not seat down and watch what is going on in Rivers State”….
